The Impact of Illustrating Performance

The initial impact of illustrating a project’s performance against our successful delivery criteria using the radar chart was to increase the level of understanding of the challenges they faced by project owners.  

Our reporting format, already focused and in plain English, was seen to have greatly improved impact once the radar chart was added.  By reflecting the report’s findings in a simple graphic, we were able to develop almost instant recognition of where the main challenges lay.  We find clients are immediately more interested in what a particular shape represents, and this interest leads to enquiry and a deeper understanding of their own project environment.

Shortly after introducing the radar chart for our clients, our ongoing analysis showed some interesting trends at an organizational level.  Firstly, by following a single project through its lifecycle, we are able to show performance over time and also interpret how the host organisation is responding to the project.  Secondly, by analyzing a series of projects within the same organisation, we are able to identify if any of the limiting factors are generic, and therefore whether they offer an even greater opportunity for improvement.
